The move comes as parent company Walt Disney Co. cut thousands of employees across all its divisions this year. “The magazine is parting ways with its staff writers, including me,” tweeted Michael Greshko, the magazine’s former science writer.
(CNN) — National Geographic, the iconic yellow-framed magazine that has chronicled the natural world for more than 100 years, fired its last remaining writers this week, several departing staff members said. *
“TODAY IS MY LAST DAY”
It was unclear how many employees were cut during the latest round of layoffs at the magazine, but the move comes as parent company Walt Disney Co. cut thousands of employees across all of its divisions this year.
National Geographic, which had more than 1.7 million subscribers at the end of 2022, will continue to publish monthly issues, a magazine spokesperson told CNN in a statement Wednesday.
“The staff changes will not change our ability to do this job, but will give us more flexibility to tell different stories and meet our audiences where they are on our many platforms,” the spokesperson said. “Any suggestion that recent changes will negatively affect the magazine, or the quality of our stories, is simply wrong.”
News of the layoffs broke on Twitter Tuesday as the departing editors of the magazine began circulating the news.
“Today is my last day at National Geographic,” tweeted Michael Greshko, the magazine’s former science writer. “The magazine is parting ways with its staff writers, including me.”
However, when contacted by CNN on Tuesday, a spokesperson said there was “nothing to report.” “It is possible that what you are seeing is from previously affected staff members who have now reached their last week with the company,” the spokesperson added.
But this Wednesday, more writers on the magazine’s staff took to Twitter to share the news of his departure.
“My new issue of National Geographic just arrived, which includes my last article: 16th and last as a Senior Writer,” Craig Welch tweeted. “NatGeo is laying off all of its staff writers.”
“It’s been an epic run @NatGeo,” tweeted Nina Strochlic, who was a writer for the post. “My colleagues and I were incredibly lucky to be the last generation of staff writers.” (Consigned by CNN Chile)
