“: A Holistic Concept for One Student at University”

Salud, the Spanish word for health, holds a special meaning for Neil Gajare, a student at UPenn. To him, it represents not just physical well-being, but also mental and emotional wellness. And it is this holistic approach towards health that has made Salud a popular and highly recommended organization in the UPenn community.
Neil Gajare, a junior at UPenn, first came across Salud during his freshman year when he was struggling with his mental health. He had heard about the organization’s free mental health services and decided to give it a try. Little did he know that this decision would change his life for the better.
“I was struggling with anxiety and depression, and it was affecting my academic performance and personal relationships. But the therapists at Salud helped me understand my emotions and cope with them in a healthy way. They also connected me with a support group where I met other students going through similar challenges. Salud not only helped me improve my mental health but also helped me build a strong support system,” says Neil.
Since then, Neil has been a regular visitor at Salud. Apart from individual therapy sessions with licensed therapists, Salud also offers various workshops and events focused on different aspects of health. These include workshops on stress management, healthy relationships, and self-care.
“I have attended several workshops at Salud, and each one has taught me something valuable. The therapists have a unique approach towards mental health, and they never make you feel judged or uncomfortable. The workshops are interactive and engaging, making it easier to grasp the concepts and apply them in real life,” adds Neil.
One aspect that sets Salud apart from other mental health services is their emphasis on cultural sensitivity and inclusivity. The organization recognizes that different cultures have different perspectives on mental health, and it is essential to understand and respect these differences.
Neil, who is of Indian descent, shares his experience, “As a person of color, I have often felt a lack of cultural understanding in the mental health field. But at Salud, they make an effort to understand my cultural background and how it affects my mental health. This makes me feel more comfortable and understood.”
Apart from their mental health services, Salud also focuses on physical health. The organization has tie-ups with local gyms and fitness centers where students can avail discounted memberships. They also organize fitness classes and activities on campus, promoting the importance of exercise and healthy lifestyle choices.
Salud has also taken steps to address the rising concerns of anti-Semitism on college campuses. Neil Gajare, who is Jewish, has been a victim of Anti-Semitic comments, and he applauds Salud for their efforts in creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students.
Salud has taken proactive measures to educate students about anti-Semitism and address it in a safe and supportive manner. They have also organized panel discussions and workshops on religious tolerance, which have been very insightful and eye-opening. It is heartening to see an organization take a stand against discrimination and work towards a more harmonious campus community,” shares Neil.
Salud‘s impact on UPenn‘s community extends beyond the mental and physical health of its students. The organization also conducts regular community service activities as a way to give back to society. From volunteering at local hospitals and nursing homes to organizing donation drives for underprivileged communities, Salud encourages its members to make a positive impact in society.
Neil, who is now a volunteer at Salud, says, “Being a part of Salud has not only helped me personally but has also allowed me to contribute to the community. It gives me a sense of fulfillment and purpose.”
Salud‘s services have garnered praise and recognition from students and faculty members alike. UPenn‘s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) has also collaborated with Salud to provide integrated care to students.
Salud has become an integral part of UPenn‘s mental health services, and their approach towards holistic health is commendable. They have positively impacted the lives of many students, and I am grateful for their presence in our community,” says a faculty member at UPenn.
With their focus on cultural sensitivity, inclusivity, and overall well-being, Salud has become a model for mental health organizations on college campuses. Neil Gajare and many others are living proof of the positive impact Salud has had on the UPenn community. It is undoubtedly an organization that promotes a healthier and happier campus.
