In the world of professional golf, the journey to success is often filled with ups and downs. For Joel Dahmen, the past few years have been a rollercoaster ride as he battled for opportunities to rebuild his momentum on the PGA Tour. However, his path back into a marquee event took a surprising turn at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Despite facing uncertainty about his future, Dahmen managed to secure the final spot in the 72-man field at Bay Hill, thanks to a reunion with his longtime caddie.
Dahmen’s journey to the PGA Tour has been anything but easy. After turning professional in 2010, he spent several years playing on the mini-tours before finally earning his PGA Tour card in 2017. However, his rookie season was cut short due to a back injury, and he had to go back to the Web.com Tour to regain his status. But Dahmen didn’t let this setback discourage him. He worked hard and earned his way back to the PGA Tour in 2018.
In 2019, Dahmen had his breakthrough season, with four top-10 finishes and a career-best finish of T2 at the Wells Fargo Championship. He also made his first appearance at the Masters and finished T12. However, just when things were looking up for Dahmen, he faced another challenge – a split with his longtime caddie, Geno Bonnalie.
Bonnalie had been Dahmen’s caddie since his days on the mini-tours and was an integral part of his success. But due to personal reasons, Bonnalie had to step away from caddying, leaving Dahmen without a caddie for the first time in his professional career.
“It was a hard split, but it was something that I had to do,” Dahmen said in an interview with Golf Channel. “I had to move on and find somebody else.”
Dahmen tried out a few different caddies, but none of them seemed to click with him. As a result, he struggled to find his form on the course. But just when he thought things couldn’t get any worse, he received a call from Bonnalie, who was ready to return to caddying.
“It was a surprise. I didn’t think he would ever come back,” Dahmen said. “But I was excited. I was like, ‘Let’s do this.'”
The reunion couldn’t have come at a better time for Dahmen. With the Arnold Palmer Invitational being a limited-field event, he was on the outside looking in. But with Bonnalie back on his bag, Dahmen managed to secure the final spot in the field, thanks to his world ranking.
“It’s just a bonus to have him back,” Dahmen said. “I’m excited to have him back and hopefully, we can get back to where we were.”
The duo’s chemistry was evident at Bay Hill, as Dahmen shot a 3-under 69 in the first round and followed it up with a 4-under 68 in the second round. While he missed the cut by one stroke, it was still a promising start to their reunion.
Now, with the Players Championship just around the corner, Dahmen is feeling confident and motivated with Bonnalie by his side. The duo has a strong bond, and Bonnalie’s return has brought back the positive energy and momentum that Dahmen had been missing.
“It’s just nice to have somebody that you trust and you know is going to be there for you,” Dahmen said. “It’s a good feeling.”
The road to success is never easy, and Dahmen’s journey is a testament to that. But with his determination and the support of his longtime caddie, he is ready to take on whatever challenges come his way. As he looks to make his mark on the PGA Tour, Dahmen’s reunion with Bonnalie is a reminder that sometimes, the best things in life come back to us when we least expect them.
