Tennessee’s Lady Vols may have had a glimmer of hope after their blowout win against Missouri, but that hope was short-lived as they fell once again to the Texas Longhorns in a close 65-63 game at the Food City Center. It was a disappointing result for Kim Caldwell’s team, defined by their poor ball security and lack of discipline with fouls. And it’s clear that Caldwell isn’t sugarcoating the issue, as she issued a wake-up call to her team after the game.
“We need to be mad,” Caldwell declared in her post-game press conference. “This is not the way we want to play, and we have to be better. Turnovers and fouls are unacceptable and we need to fix it now.”
Caldwell’s frustration is understandable, as the Lady Vols had a total of 19 turnovers and committed 21 fouls in the game. These mistakes proved to be costly, allowing the Longhorns to gain momentum and ultimately secure the win.
But despite the disappointing result, Caldwell remains optimistic and motivated. She knows her team has the potential to be successful, but they need to make some changes in order to reach their full potential.
“We have the talent, we have the ability, but we need to have the right mindset,” she explained. “We need to be focused and disciplined, both on the court and off the court. We need to take care of the ball and play smart defense.”
Caldwell’s words are a wake-up call for the Lady Vols, and it’s clear that she expects more from her team. She knows that they can’t afford to make the same mistakes if they want to achieve their goals this season.
“We need to learn from this game and move on,” said Caldwell. “We can’t dwell on the past, but we can use it to fuel us for the future. We need to be mad and use that anger to motivate us to be better.”
It’s clear that Caldwell’s passion and determination are contagious, and her players are taking note. Senior guard Alexis Hornbuckle shared her coach’s sentiments and acknowledged the need for change.
“We have to be better, plain and simple,” Hornbuckle stated. “We can’t keep making the same mistakes. We need to take ownership and hold each other accountable. We know what we need to do, we just need to do it.”
The Lady Vols will have a chance to redeem themselves in their upcoming games, and Caldwell is confident that her team will rise to the challenge.
“We have a lot of work to do, but I have faith in this team,” she said. “We have the talent and the heart, and I know we can turn things around. We just need to be mad and use that fire to propel us forward.”
It’s clear that Caldwell’s words have struck a chord with her team, as they are determined to make a comeback and prove themselves as a top contender in the league. The Lady Vols may have had a rough start, but with Caldwell’s leadership and the team’s determination, there is no doubt that they will bounce back stronger than ever.
So, to all the Lady Vols fans out there, don’t lose hope just yet. This is just a minor setback and with Caldwell at the helm, there is a glimmer of hope for a successful season. Let’s continue to support our team and trust that they will use this wake-up call to fuel their drive for success. Go Lady Vols!
