Patricia Kelly, founder of Ebony Horsewomen, Inc., is a woman on a mission. Founded in 1984, Ebony Horsewomen, Inc. is a non-profit organization located in Hartford, Connecticut. For more than three decades, it has been dedicated to promoting equity, justice, and opportunity for African Americans and other people of color through equine-assisted activities and learning. The organization offers programs that focus on building life skills, leadership, and self-confidence in youth, all while honoring the rich history of Black equestrians.
As a child, Patricia Kelly was fascinated by horses and had a natural talent for riding them. However, as she grew up, she realized that the equestrian industry was not very welcoming to people of color. She often felt like an outsider and saw the lack of representation of Black riders in the sport. This realization sparked her passion to educate people about the history of Black equestrians and create a space for the Black community to connect with horses.
Through Ebony Horsewomen, Inc., Patricia has been able to combine her love for horses and her dedication to her community. One of the organization’s most sought-after programs is the Horse Riding and Equine Science Program. This program offers participants a unique opportunity to learn about horses, their care, and riding skills, as well as the history of Black equestrians. The program is open to children as young as 8 years old and focuses on building a strong foundation in horsemanship. It also includes lessons on horse health, grooming, stable management, and safe handling practices.
In addition to equine education, Ebony Horsewomen, Inc. also offers therapeutic horseback riding for individuals with physical, cognitive, and emotional disabilities.
