Choose your America: In the aftermath of the Kirk slaying, a snapshot of a fractured nation

The current state of America has left many people confused and seeking answers. From the ongoing pandemic to the recent protests and social unrest, it seems like our country is going through a period of turmoil. And no one seems to have the answers to the questions that are on everyone’s mind: What is happening in America? How did we get here? And where do we go from here?

As the governor of Utah, I have been grappling with these questions myself. And I have realized that finding the right words to describe the situation is no easy task. How do you explain something that is so complex and multifaceted? How do you put into words the emotions that are running high and the challenges that lie ahead?

But despite the difficulty, I believe it is important for us to have this conversation and try to make sense of what is happening. It is only through understanding and open dialogue that we can find a way to move forward and create a better future for our country.

First and foremost, we must acknowledge that America is going through a period of change. And change is never easy. It brings uncertainty and discomfort. But it is also necessary for growth and progress. Our country has a long history of fighting for change and overcoming challenges, and I have no doubt that we will do so once again.

One of the biggest factors contributing to the current state of America is the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The virus has not only taken a toll on our physical health but also on our economy and mental well-being. It has exposed the weaknesses and inequalities in our society and highlighted the need for better healthcare and social safety nets. But it has also shown the resilience and strength of our communities as we come together to support and take care of each other during these difficult times.

Another issue that has been at the forefront of recent events is systemic racism and police brutality. The tragic deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery, and many others have sparked a nationwide movement for racial justice and equality. And while these issues have been prevalent in our society for centuries, it is only now that we are seeing a widespread call for change and a reckoning with our past.

As a leader, I understand that it is my responsibility to listen, learn, and take action to address these issues. And I am proud to see that people all over America are doing the same. From peaceful protests to difficult conversations, we are coming together to demand change and create a more just and equitable society for all.

But amidst all the challenges and difficulties, there is also hope. I see it in the acts of kindness and generosity of my fellow citizens. I see it in the resilience and determination of our communities. And I see it in the younger generation, who are passionate about creating a better world for themselves and future generations.

So, what is happening in America? We are going through a period of change and facing challenges that have been ignored for far too long. But we are also coming together to address these issues and create a more just and equal society. It is a difficult and uncomfortable process, but it is necessary for us to move forward and create a better future for all.

As the governor of Utah, I urge all of us to continue having these conversations and taking meaningful action towards positive change. Let us not be defined by our challenges, but by how we overcome them. Let us come together as one nation and work towards a brighter tomorrow. And let us never lose hope, for it is hope that will guide us towards a better, more united America.
