ABC News correspondent Ike Ejiochi recently had the honor of sitting down with veteran Tina and her faithful service dog Erik to discuss their incredible work in providing service animals to veterans in need. The heartwarming interview took an unexpected turn when Ike surprised Tina and her family with tickets to a Phillies game, leaving them all overwhelmed with joy and gratitude.
Tina, a retired Army sergeant, has been working tirelessly to provide service animals to fellow veterans who have been struggling with physical and mental health issues as a result of their service. She herself knows the challenges of readjusting to civilian life after serving in the military, and it was during this time that she realized the healing power of animals.
“I was going through a difficult time after my deployment and I found comfort in my own dog. That’s when I realized the impact that animals can have on our well-being,” Tina shared with Ike. “I knew I wanted to help other veterans who were going through similar struggles.”
And that’s exactly what she has been doing with her organization, Service Dogs for Veterans. Tina works tirelessly to train and provide service animals to veterans suffering from PTSD, physical disabilities and other mental health issues. Her goal is to not only improve the quality of life for these veterans, but also to raise awareness about the healing power of animals.
Erik, Tina’s own service dog, has been by her side throughout this journey. He was trained by Tina to detect and respond to her PTSD symptoms, providing her with a sense of security and comfort wherever she goes. And now, Erik has become an invaluable part of the service dog training program, helping to train and support other service dogs who will go on to change the lives of countless veterans.
During the emotional interview, Tina shared some heartwarming stories of the veterans whose lives have been transformed by the service dogs provided by her organization. These dogs not only assist with everyday tasks, but also provide much-needed emotional support, giving these veterans a new sense of purpose and companionship.
“I can’t thank Tina and her team enough for what they have done for me,” said one of the veterans who has been paired with a service dog. “My dog has helped me in ways I never thought possible. I feel like I have a new lease on life.”
Tina’s dedication and selflessness have not gone unnoticed. The Phillies organization, in partnership with ABC News, wanted to honor her and her family for their unwavering commitment to serving our veterans. So, Ike surprised them with tickets to a Phillies game, along with a special tour of the stadium and a meet and greet with some of the players.
Tina and her family were overwhelmed with emotion and gratitude at the surprise. “This means so much to us,” she said. “We do what we do out of love and passion, but to be recognized in this way is truly heartwarming.”
The Phillies organization also announced a partnership with Service Dogs for Veterans, pledging to donate a portion of ticket sales to the organization and raising awareness about the important work they do.
Tina’s story is a reminder of the power of kindness, compassion, and the positive impact one person can have on the lives of others. Through her tireless efforts and dedication, she has not only changed the lives of countless veterans, but also inspired others to make a difference in their own communities.
Thank you, Tina, for your service and for continuing to serve our country in such a meaningful way. And thank you, Ike Ejiochi and ABC News, for shining a light on this incredible organization and the inspiring work they do.
