For 30 years, Riverdance has been captivating audiences worldwide with its mesmerizing blend of traditional Irish dance and contemporary flair. From its humble beginnings as a seven-minute performance at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1994, to becoming a global phenomenon with multiple world tours and a successful Broadway show, Riverdance has stood the test of time and continues to wow audiences with its powerful performances.
To celebrate this milestone, ABC News’ Will Ganss sat down with Riverdance CEO Padraic Moyles and lead dancer Anna Mai Fitzpatrick to discuss the history, impact, and legacy of this beloved Irish dance tradition.
Moyles, who has been with Riverdance since its inception, recalls the early days of the show and the overwhelming response it received. “We knew we had something special, but we could have never imagined the global reach it would have,” he says. “It’s been an incredible journey and we’re grateful to our fans for their unwavering support.”
Fitzpatrick, who joined the Riverdance troupe in 2006, describes the experience of being part of such a prestigious dance company as a dream come true. “Growing up in Ireland, Riverdance was always a huge inspiration for me,” she shares. “To now be a part of it and contribute to its legacy is truly an honor.”
As they reflect on the past three decades, both Moyles and Fitzpatrick emphasize the importance of staying true to the traditional roots of Irish dance while also incorporating modern elements to keep the show fresh and relevant.
“We never want to lose the essence of Irish dance, but we also want to continue to evolve and push the boundaries,” says Moyles. Fitzpatrick adds, “We’re constantly learning and experimenting with new styles and techniques, but we always make sure to stay true to the heart and soul of Riverdance.”
One of the ways Riverdance has stayed relevant over the years is by constantly introducing new dancers to the show. Fitzpatrick explains that this not only keeps the performances dynamic, but it also gives opportunities to up-and-coming dancers to showcase their talent on a global stage.
“It’s amazing to see how many young dancers have been inspired by Riverdance and have joined our cast over the years,” says Fitzpatrick. “We’re always looking for fresh talent, and it’s exciting to see the next generation embrace this beautiful art form.”
And for those who may be intimidated by the fast-paced and intricate footwork of Irish dance, Moyles and Fitzpatrick have some encouraging words. “Anyone can learn Irish dance, you just have to be willing to put in the time and effort,” says Moyles. “It’s a highly disciplined and physically demanding art form, but it’s also incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.”
To prove the point, Ganss got to experience first-hand the thrill of Irish dance as Moyles and Fitzpatrick taught him a few basic steps. With some quick footwork and a lot of laughter, Ganss was able to keep up and even joined in on a group performance of the iconic Riverdance finale.
As the interview comes to a close, Moyles and Fitzpatrick express their gratitude to everyone who has been a part of Riverdance’s journey over the past 30 years. “We couldn’t have reached this milestone without our amazing dancers, production team, and, of course, our loyal fans,” says Moyles. “We hope to continue sharing the magic of Riverdance with audiences around the world for many more years to come.”
Riverdance’s 30th anniversary tour is currently underway, with upcoming shows in North America, Europe, and Australia. With its powerful and electrifying performances, Riverdance continues to captivate audiences and solidify its place as a cultural masterpiece. Congratulations to Riverdance on 30 years of excellence and here’s to many more years of inspiring the world with the beauty and grace of Irish dance.
