Dems call for probe into ‘troubling pattern’ of legal wins for Pam Bondi’s brother

Two Democratic lawmakers, Senator Elizabeth Warren and Representative Pramila Jayapal, have called on the Department of Justice (DOJ) internal watchdog to investigate the alleged “troubling pattern” of favorable outcomes for clients represented by Brad Bondi, a former government lawyer and current lobbyist.

In a letter addressed to DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz, the two lawmakers expressed their concerns regarding the potential conflicts of interest arising from Bondi’s representation of corporate clients in legal matters while also serving as an advisor to the DOJ.

According to the letter, Bondi has represented a number of corporations in high-profile cases that were later resolved in favor of the company, while also advising the DOJ on matters related to financial regulation and enforcement. This raises questions about whether Bondi’s role as a lobbyist is influencing the DOJ’s decision-making process.

The lawmakers cited several examples, including the 2018 settlement between the DOJ and Citigroup over mortgage securities sales, in which Bondi represented the bank while also serving as an advisor to the DOJ on consumer protection matters. The settlement, which was significantly lower than what the DOJ initially sought, has raised suspicions of favoritism towards Bondi’s client.

In addition, the letter points to Bondi’s representation of the insurance giant AIG in a case involving alleged accounting fraud, which was ultimately dismissed by the DOJ in 2015. Bondi’s involvement in the case has raised questions about the potential influence of his ties to the company.

“The revolving door between government and the private sector has long been a concern, but the recent pattern involving Mr. Bondi is particularly troubling,” the lawmakers wrote in the letter. “It appears that Mr. Bondi has used his position as an advisor to the DOJ to benefit his clients, creating a conflict of interest that undermines the integrity of our justice system.”

The two lawmakers have called on the DOJ’s Inspector General to conduct a thorough investigation into Bondi’s potential conflicts of interest and to make any necessary recommendations to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.

“The American people deserve a justice system that is fair and impartial, and any potential conflicts of interest must be addressed to ensure the integrity of our legal system,” the letter stated.

Bondi, who served as a counsel to former Florida Governor Jeb Bush and as a legal advisor to former Vice President Dick Cheney, has denied any wrongdoing and stated that he has followed all ethical guidelines.

However, this is not the first time that concerns have been raised about Bondi’s ties to corporate clients. In 2018, he was criticized for his role in representing the pharmaceutical company Mylan during an antitrust investigation by the DOJ. The investigation eventually ended in a settlement that was deemed favorable to Mylan.

In response to the call for an investigation, a spokesperson for Bondi stated that he “adheres to the highest ethical and legal standards in his practice and has always operated with complete transparency.”

The DOJ’s Inspector General has yet to respond to the letter from Warren and Jayapal, but the lawmakers are hopeful that their request will be taken seriously and that appropriate actions will be taken to address any potential conflicts of interest.

As the legal system plays a vital role in upholding justice and protecting the rights of all individuals, it is crucial that it remains free from any influence or bias. The call for an investigation into Brad Bondi’s potential conflicts of interest is a step towards ensuring that the system remains fair and impartial for all. As Senator Warren and Representative Jayapal have stated, the American people deserve a justice system that operates with integrity and without any hint of favoritism towards corporate interests.
