This time last year, I achieved one of the greatest moments of my life – becoming the European Champion in track and field. As I crossed the finish line, with the Irish national anthem, Amhrán na bhFiann, ringing in my ears, I couldn’t help but feel overwhelming pride and gratitude. Looking back on that moment, I am reminded of the incredible journey that led me there and the people who played a crucial role in my success.
Reflecting on my journey in sport, I am filled with emotions of pure joy and gratitude for all the opportunities and experiences that I have been fortunate enough to have. From a young age, I was fascinated by the thrill and excitement of athletics. The rush of adrenaline as I competed against others and against my own personal bests was a feeling unlike any other. Little did I know that this passion for track and field would lead me to become a European Champion.
Growing up, I faced many challenges and obstacles along the way. There were moments when I questioned my abilities and struggled with self-doubt. But it was the sport that kept me going, that instilled in me the values of determination, perseverance, and resilience. These values were not only crucial in the world of athletics but have also helped me navigate through life off the track.
As I progressed in my athletic career, I was fortunate to have a strong support system around me. My coaches, teammates, family, and friends have been my pillars of strength. They believed in me, motivated me, and pushed me beyond my limits. Without their unwavering support, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve what I have today. Their commitment and dedication to my success never went unnoticed, and I’m forever grateful for their presence in my life.
Becoming a European Champion was the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifices. The training, the early mornings, the strict diet, the injuries – they all seemed worth it when I stood on that podium with the gold medal around my neck. Every step of the journey had been leading up to that moment, and it was a feeling I will never forget.
But, just three weeks ago, I received news that left me and the entire track and field community devastated. One of our own, a two-time Olympian and a dear friend, made a tragic admission. After battling with injuries, self-doubt, and the pressure of being in the public eye, she announced her retirement from athletics. Her journey in the sport may have come to an end, but her legacy will continue to inspire many young athletes for years to come.
This news hit close to home, as I have been fortunate enough to have crossed paths with her during my own career. To see someone with so much potential, passion, and dedication have to say goodbye to the sport they love is heart-wrenching. But it serves as a reminder that in the world of sports, injuries, setbacks, and disappointments are also a part of the game. It’s how we overcome these challenges that truly define us.
As the track and field community mourns the loss of one of its own, we are also reminded of the importance of mental health in the sporting world. While physical injuries are visible and receive adequate attention and treatment, mental health issues in athletes often go unnoticed and unaddressed. It’s a reminder to all of us to prioritize our mental health and to extend support and understanding to our fellow athletes.
As I look back at the past year, I am grateful for every moment that sport has given me. The highs, the lows, the victories, and the defeats – they have all molded me into the person I am today. And for that, I will forever be indebted to the world of athletics.
As I gear up for the upcoming season, I am motivated to continue chasing my dreams and pushing myself to new heights. While the memory of standing on that podium as the European Champion will always give me chills, I am excited to create new memories and have new experiences on and off the track.
To anyone reading this, I hope my journey serves as a reminder to never give up on your goals and dreams. No matter what challenges or obstacles come your way, keep pushing forward with determination and never lose sight of your passion. Who knows, one day you may find yourself standing on that podium as a champion, with the national anthem blaring and chills running through your body. And when that day
