Brad Holmes on Bears HC Ben Johnson: “Man, Why Chicago?”

The Chicago Bears made headlines this week when they announced their new head coach, Ben Johnson. The Bears’ decision to hire Johnson was met with mixed reactions from fans and analysts alike. However, one person who was particularly surprised by the move was Lions’ general manager Brad Holmes.

In an interview with Heavy Sports, Holmes shared his initial reaction to Johnson taking the Bears head coaching job. “Man, why Chicago?” Holmes exclaimed. “I couldn’t believe it when I heard the news. I thought for sure he would end up with us here in Detroit.”

Holmes’ reaction is understandable considering the history between Johnson and the Lions organization. Johnson had spent the past six years with the Lions, most recently as their passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He had built a strong reputation as an up-and-coming coach and was highly regarded within the organization.

So, what led to Johnson’s surprising move to the Bears? According to Holmes, it was a combination of factors. “First of all, I think it was a great opportunity for Ben,” Holmes explained. “The Bears are a storied franchise with a passionate fan base, and they have a talented roster. It’s a great challenge for any coach.”

But beyond the opportunity, Holmes also believes that Johnson’s decision was influenced by the Bears’ new general manager, Ryan Pace. “Ryan and Ben have a history together,” Holmes revealed. “They were both on the same staff in New Orleans, so there’s already a level of familiarity and trust between them.”

Holmes also acknowledged that the Lions were not in a position to offer Johnson the head coaching job at this time. “We are currently in the midst of a rebuilding process, and we felt that we needed to bring in a more experienced head coach,” he said. “We are confident that we have found the right person in Dan Campbell, and we are excited to see what he can do for our team.”

Despite his initial surprise and disappointment, Holmes holds no ill will towards Johnson for his decision. “I have nothing but respect for Ben,” he stated. “He has been a valuable member of our organization, and we wish him all the best in his new role with the Bears.”

Holmes also expressed confidence in the Lions’ ability to move forward without Johnson. “We have a strong coaching staff in place, and I have no doubt that they will continue to develop our players and lead us in the right direction,” he said.

As for Johnson, he is ready to take on the challenge of leading the Bears to success. “I am grateful for my time in Detroit, and I am excited for this new opportunity in Chicago,” he said in a statement. “I am ready to get to work and help this team reach its full potential.”

In the end, while Holmes may have been initially taken aback by Johnson’s move to the Bears, he remains positive and focused on the future of the Lions. “We will continue to build our team and strive for success,” he concluded. “And who knows, maybe we will face off against Ben and the Bears in the playoffs one day.”
