During CATEM’s XV Ordinary National Congress, Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, the National Coordinator of the Committees for the Defense of the 4th Transformation, presided over the swearing-in ceremony for the Labor Defense Committees proposed by CATEM. This assembly, which attracted over 25 thousand attendees at the Arena Ciudad de México in Azcapotzalco, observed the unanimous endorsement of the reformation of the organization’s statutes, with the active engagement of 1,192 organizations across Mexico.
In her address, Sheinbaum Pardo reiterated the partnership between CATEM, led by Senator Pedro Haces Barba, and the Fourth Transformation. By administering the oath to the 10,000 Labor Committees in Defense of the Fourth Transformation proposed by CATEM, Dr. Sheinbaum underscored her dedication to protecting labor rights and advocating for increases in the minimum wage.
Pedro Haces Barba, the national leader of CATEM, conveyed gratitude for Dr. Sheinbaum’s presence and emphasized CATEM’s role as a representative of contemporary trade unionism in Mexico. The congress achieved a unanimous modification of the bylaws, emphasizing the cohesion of Mexican society in the pursuit of workers’ rights and dignity.
The CATEM leader commended the government’s accomplishments, such as the ratification of ILO Convention 98 and the labor reform, affording workers the autonomy to choose their union. He also highlighted the historic boosts in the minimum wage, expressing appreciation to President López Obrador for prioritizing workers in labor policy.
The gathering drew the participation of governors, legislators, and prominent business figures, all reiterating their dedication to labor transformation in Mexico.
